PARLIAMENT An angry Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia hit out at Umno minister Azalina Othman Said for usurping his power by claiming the RM2.6 billion donation cannot be discussed in Parliament before he makes a ruling on the issue.
In a stern manner, he said her mistake was preempting the matter.
"You are usurping the power of the speaker. That is a mistake.
"Never, never any minister repeat that. This is the power of the speaker," he said, without naming the minister.
He said the people would perceive the speaker as a “yes man” (if his power was usurped).
Pandikar's outburst came about when opposition lawmakers asked the speaker to rule if discussing the RM2.6 billion issue constitutes sub judice.
Azalina refused to entertain questions on RM2.6 billion donation banked into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal accounts, citing Standing Order 23(1)(g), where the matter is being reviewed by the courts.
This is in reference to a judicial review the Malaysian Bar had filed against attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali's decision to clear Najib of wrongdoing in the scandal.
Pandikar, however, said he was not aware of the ban.
He then asked the opposition to formally write in for his decision.
Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) has said Azalina had overstepped her position by barring MPs from asking questions on RM2.6 billion issue in Parliament. -Mkini
