Big Blue Taxi Services adviser Shamsubahrin Ismail assures government it can be trusted to give good service if given a chance and that only disciplined drivers will be selected for the Games.
KUALA LUMPUR: A taxi service provider has asked for a meeting with Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to discuss giving taxis preference over e-hailing service Grab during the KL SEA Games in August.
Big Blue Taxi Facilities (BBTF) Sdn Bhd adviser Shamsubahrin Ismail said it would send an official letter to Khairy today seeking an “urgent meeting”.
“The contents of the letter will be straight forward. We request for an urgent meeting to participate (in the SEA Games) and to give us a chance to show to the world and the people that the taxi industry is still relevant and without any criminal activity.
“That is my assurance to the government. We are ready to give our best service to the world. Trust us, we are ready to give the best service to passengers and tourists. Only the good and disciplined ones will be registered to take part during the SEA Games,” he told a media conference in his office in Ampang.
Khairy announced recently that Grab had been signed on as one of the official sponsors for the 29th SEA Games, although it had yet to get parliamentary approval or a license from SPAD, the land public transport commission.
The minister said although the operation of Grab in the country had not been finalised, it did not pose a problem.
Shamsubahrin said the image of the taxi industry had previously been tarnished by a minority of drivers who had cheated passengers but the majority of them were hardworking and honest.
He urged Khairy to look at the legal aspects of e-hailing in the country as ride-sharing services had not yet been approved by Parliament.
An amendment to the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987 to regulate ride-sharing services is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon. -FMT
