With most seats in Perak, it’s fair Umno gets MB post, says Ahmad Maslan

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has a right to lead the new Perak government having the most number of seats in the state legislative assembly, says its secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Speaking to reporters before a Muafakat Nasional (MN) Consultative Council meeting here tonight, he said therefore, it was only fair for Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad to be appointed the next menteri besar.

Ahmad also congratulated Saarani on the appointment, adding that the Umno Supreme Council was looking forward to working together with PAS and PPBM in the state government.

“For me, the Perak incident has enhanced relations between Umno, PPBM and PAS. We are grateful that it has been settled,” he said at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).

In the 59-seat Perak state legislative assembly, Umno has 25 seats, PPBM five, PAS three, and Gerakan one. There is one independent.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) has 24 seats with DAP leading the way with 16, PKR three, and Amanah five.

Meanwhile, BN secretary-general Annuar Musa said tonight’s meeting was just a “regular MN meeting”.

He added that PPBM’s potential entry in MN was not on the agenda tonight, as the focus would be on MN’s plans for the next general election (GE15).

Earlier today, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, consented to Kota Tampan assemblyman Saarani as the state’s new menteri besar. He is expected to be sworn in at 11am tomorrow.

His appointment comes after the presidents of Umno, PPBM and PAS agreed to nominate him as menteri besar, following PPBM deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu’s ouster last Friday when he lost the confidence of the state assembly with 48 out of the 59 assemblymen voting against him. - FMT
