Covid-19 (June 1): 7,105 new cases, Selangor above 2k for 10th consecutive day, 71 deaths

The Health Ministry today reported 7,105 new Covid-19 cases, amidst a record number of active cases which has breached the 80,000 mark.

A record number of patients needing intensive care and active clusters were reported today.

  • Active cases: 80,474
  • Patients in ICU: 872
  • Intubated: 419

New cases by state

  • Selangor (2068)
  • Kuala Lumpur (817)
  • Sarawak (703)
  • Kelantan (531)
  • Johor (431)
  • Penang (400)
  • Negeri Sembilan (397)
  • Perak (387)
  • Sabah (318)
  • Malacca (249)
  • Kedah (236)
  • Terengganu (198)
  • Pahang (190)
  • Labuan (162)
  • Putrajaya (18)
  • Perlis (0)

Selangor reported 2,068 new infections today, making it the 10th consecutive day where fresh cases are above 2,000.

Approximately one in 12 new cases in Selangor were detected among those reporting symptoms. This was a welcome sign because it is considerably better than one in seven observed on May 27.

Kuala Lumpur saw a significant surge of 817 new cases, near the record high of 830 cases set on May 28.

As of yesterday, the R-naught for the country was 1.09, down from a year-to-date high of 1.21 observed on May 23. As long as the R-naught stays higher than 1.00, it suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was accelerating.

Every single state or territory in the country has a R-naught of more than 1.00.

Deaths

Another 71 deaths related to Covid-19 were reported today, bringing the national death toll to 2,867.

The deaths were reported in Selangor (28), Johor (8), Sarawak (7), Kuala Lumpur (6), Kelantan (5), Malacca (4), Kedah (3), Negeri Sembilan (2), Terengganu (2), Perak (2), Sabah (1), Pahang (1), Labuan (1) and Penang (1).

The youngest victim was a 27-year-old woman in Sarawak. Five victims were prounounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
