PETALING JAYA: The 12-year-old girl beaten up in a video that has since gone viral was allegedly attacked by a group of her classmates out of jealousy.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the incident occurred on Sunday (June 27).
"The victim lodged a police report claiming that she was attacked by a group of her classmates at the stairwell of a flat. She claims that one of the girls who attacked her was jealous over her relationship with the girl’s foster brother," he said in a statement on Monday (June 28).
He said the victim suffered injuries to her head and body from the beating.
"Our investigations revealed the incident occurred at a flat at Kelana Jaya.During the incident, one of the suspect’s friends recorded the attack and shared it on WhatsApp as well as the suspect’s Instagram account," he said, adding that the case was being investigated as voluntarily causing hurt.
He said the deputy public prosecutor has ordered that an investigation be carried out to identify all the suspects involved.
"We also advise the public to refrain from circulating the video as the case is under investigation," he said.
The three-minute long video shows a group of at least three girls confronting the victim and shouting.
About 30 seconds into the video, one of the girls wearing a yellow shirt is seen grabbing the victim’s hair and wrestling her to the ground.
The victim bundles herself as the attacker pulls her hair while the other girls are seen cheering her attacker on.
The victim is then kicked several times and stepped on.
Two minutes and 20 seconds into the video, the attacker grabs the victim and starts profusely pulling her hair, beating her and kicking her before another girl breaks up the fight. - Star
