Johor Bahru Bersatu chief Abdull Bakar Ali said the division’s women’s wing is still relevant despite several resignations among its committee members, and that there is no need to disband the wing.
The clarification came after allegations emerged online that the division's women's wing had been dissolved.
“Johor Bahru Bersatu wishes to explain that the Johor Bahru women’s wing has not been disbanded as alleged on social media, and still operates, as usual, to provide services to the people and the party,” Abdull Bakar said in a statement last night.
Yesterday, Sinar Harian reported that four of the wing’s committee members Hafsah Ahamed, Nur Diana Abdul Halim, Puteri Firdaus Aswad Megat and Sulhaza Suleiman resigned, citing a lack of mutual understanding with the leadership.
“What were proposed by the grassroots were ignored by the divisional women’s wing leadership. This makes it difficult for us to serve as committee members,” Hafsah was quoted as saying.
The resignations followed that of Johor Bahru Bersatu women’s wing permanent chairperson Masazlina Bachok, her deputy Khairunnisah Ali and six more committee members, which came into effect on Sunday.
The report said they were critical of the leadership of Johor Bahru Bersatu women’s chief Azlinda Abdul Latif.
However, Abdull Bakar said that in accordance with the party constitution, these resignations do not result in the wing’s dissolution.
Moreover, he said, some of the committee members have already retracted their resignation letters.
“We are confident the Johor Bahru women’s wing’s leadership can transform the wing to be better in the future.
“The Johor Bahru Bersatu division also accepts the resignations of the women’s wing committee members with an open heart, as the party’s interests trump individual desires.
“We wish them well in the journey ahead and thank them for all their contributions to date,” Abdull Bakar added. - Mkini
