PKR questions why govt imposing different standards for its virtual congress

PKR has questioned why the government was imposing different standards on the party with regard to the standard operating procedure (SOP) against Covid-19.

This was after PKR was ordered to postpone its virtual national congress yesterday at the last minute.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil (above) took to Twitter to highlight various virtual congresses that have proceeded without issues during the "total lockdown" which was announced on May 28 and took effect on June 1.

"The National PKR Congress (online) was ordered to be postponed at the last minute even though the National Security Council said it had no objections on May 27 on the grounds that the movement control order (MCO) SOP does not allow it.

"But other annual general assemblies are okay? These do not breach the MCO SOP? Or is PKR different?" Fahmi said.

He also shared pictures of virtual conferences by other organisations during the MCO.

This included the annual general assemblies (AGMs) by the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board and Koperasi Perdana MyAlumni Polycc Berhad which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Higher Education Mansor Othman.

Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail questioned if those AGMs were "essential social activities".

"For PKR, it's a different SOP," he told Malaysiakini.
