PETALING JAYA: The country loses RM1bil every day with the lockdown in place, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin said the current lockdown had successfully staved off an exponential surge in Covid-19 cases.
He noted that the Health Ministry had projected that if the lockdown had not been enforced, daily Covid-19 cases would have reach 13,000 cases and the country's healthcare system would have crumbled.
"Fortunately, during phase one of the lockdown, there was a downward trend in daily Covid-19 cases, with 4,949 cases yesterday compared to 9,020 cases on May 29, the highest ever recorded daily.
"Our healthcare system is now able to accommodate new cases and recording high numbers of recoveries.
"We have avoided a catastrophe," he said during his special address to the nation on Tuesday (June 15).
Muhyiddin also said getting out of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis was essential and the National Recovery Plan presented a phased exit strategy.
Muhyiddin said the government had developed this plan to ensure that decisions made are for the lives and livelihoods of the people.
"It also takes into account the Covid-19 threat that is still in the community as well as the high active cases in hospital," he said. - Star
