Takiyuddin: Govt yet to decide on hybrid Parliament, will follow Aug-Sept timeline

De facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan said the government has yet to decide whether Parliament will reconvene physically or under a hybrid model where some MPs will attend virtually.

He also said the government will target the August-September timeline to reconvene Parliament as proposed by Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim.

The government had initially set a September-October timeline. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong had called for Parliament to reconvene "as soon as possible" after it had been suspended under a state of emergency since Jan 11.

"The speaker only just proposed the hybrid sitting to the government and we have yet to decide on which method.

"Parliament is expected to convene in late August and early September as previously announced by the speaker," Takiyuddin (above) told journalists after visiting a vaccination centre in Kota Bharu today.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong had also summoned Azhar and Rais. They are expected to meet next Tuesday (June 29).

Takiyuddin said the notice to convene Parliament will be made after the emergency expires on Aug 1 and must be 28 days before the sitting convenes.

"For the exact date on when Parliament will convene, that depends on the prime minister because he will decide.

"The prime minister will inform the speaker to issue the notice to all MPs 28 days before the Parliament sitting," he said. - Mkini
