There is no point for the government to be granted emergency powers if it does not use them for the benefit of the people, said Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
He said this when commenting on whether the state of emergency, which is due to expire in August, should be extended.
Asyraf said the government should best use the remaining time before the emergency expires to help the people amid the total lockdown.
"Order banks to extend an interest-free moratorium to all M40 income earners.
"Order the Employees Provident Fund to allow the people to access i-Sinar 2.0 and i-Lestari 2.0.
"Control the drastic rise in prices of essential goods during the pandemic.
"What's the point of the emergency if it can't help the people?" he said.
The i-Sinar and i-Lestari programmes allow people to dip into their retirement savings to cope with the pandemic.
He noted that the conference of rulers will be meeting on June 16 to decide the future of the emergency.
Asyraf said among the questions that will have to be addressed was whether the emergency had helped combat the pandemic and benefited the people.
The government, however, signalled that the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong should act in accordance with the cabinet's advice. - Mkini
