Activists detained at vigil for Covid-19 deaths released at 1am, fined RM62,000

A group of 31 activists who were hauled up by police after attending a candlelight vigil for Covid-19 deaths were released in the wee hours of the morning.

They were each slapped with RM2,000 compounds - totalling RM62,000 - for violating regulations preventing demonstrations during the pandemic.

The individuals, including from Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) - the organiser of the recent #Lawan protest - comprise 17 men and 14 women, mostly youths.

They had gathered briefly at Dataran Merdeka last night for a vigil - under the heavy watch of police before being arrested.

Police stopped the vigil at 8.30pm after a statement from SSR was read out, before seizing participants identification cards.

Several police officers were heard telling the participants to follow them to Dang Wangi police station for "documentation purposes".

Police then proceeded to drag the participants into Black Marias which hauled them to the nearby Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

In a brief Facebook message, Bersih said all detainees were later released at around 1.10am

Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya in a statement last night, said police had opened investigations under the Peaceful Assembly Act, and the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act.

He also advised the public to adhere to Covid-19 SOPs.

As of yesterday, the death toll from Covid-19 is 13,480. - Mkini
