PETALING JAYA: While the King is serious in upholding the Federal Constitution by acting within its boundaries, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin appears to be using it for his political mileage instead of preserving the integrity of his office, says Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
He said the letter by the Palace to Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to confirm the number of MPs supporting the prime minister clearly proved that the King is very sceptical of the claims made by Muhyiddin.
“This is an unprecedented turn of events and casts doubts upon the credibility of the prime minister’s statements and actions.
“His claim of still holding a majority is unconstitutional, including his decision to deliberately postpone the Parliament sitting to confirm his majority,” he said in a statement, adding that this will put the government in a vulnerable position.
Mohamad, commonly known as Tok Mat, was commenting on Muhyiddin’s special announcement yesterday which stated that no MP has the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Tok Mat said the legitimacy and constitutionality of every decision made by the executive can now be challenged, adding that this will expose it to a multitude of legal disputes and financial loss risks if Muhyiddin fails to step down.
“To prevent the nation from continuing to spiral down in the midst of this constitutional disarray, the executive must come through and take the right action and uphold the Constitution.
“Muhyiddin must assist the King in carrying out his constitutional duty rather than complicating it.
“Nothing is more important to a prime minister than fulfilling his responsibilities within the limits and mandate provided by the Constitution,” he said.
Tok Mat said, currently, Muhyiddin seemed to be the only one defending a position that could no longer be defended, adding that he should know that the Constitution is “non-negotiable”. - FMT
