Bukit Aman freezes leave for all personnel with immediate effect

Bukit Aman has issued an order to freeze the leave for all police personnel with immediate effect until further notice.

It is learned that the order was issued by management department director Zaini Jass yesterday for an operation called "Ops Aman".

Sources privy to the matter claimed that leave had been frozen as police needed to be on standby for an upcoming protest rally on Aug 21 to demand Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation.

However, Zaini denied it was related to the protest.

"This is normal practice, as what the police has been doing from time to time. Nothing to do with the protest," he told Malaysiakini this afternoon.

Zaini also denied that the order was issued because an election is going to be held soon.

On July 31, hundreds of protesters rallied in Kuala Lumpur and marched to Dataran Merdeka to demand Muhyiddin's resignation.

Following the event, police had called in the rally organisers and participants for questioning. Officers even showed up at the homes of several activists.

On Aug 7, the organisers had again called for Muhyiddin to resign over his failings and announced that they were planning for a “bigger” protest in two weeks should the premier fail to heed their demand.

Later on the same day, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani vowed to take stern action against any “stubborn” quarters that either organise or join in a protest. - Mkini
