MELAKA: A five-year-old girl, believed to be a victim of abuse, was rescued from a house in Banda Hilir here last night.
Melaka CID chief Mohd Sukri Kaman said the girl was believed to have been beaten by her biological mother and the mother’s boyfriend.
“The Melaka police contingent headquarters’ operations room received a phone call from a member of the public on a suspected child abuse case in Banda Hilir at 9.25 last night.
“Policemen from the Melaka CID’s sexual, women and children’s investigations division went to the scene and rescued the victim an hour later,” he said in a statement here today.
Initial investigations found that several injuries on the girl’s body, believed due to abuse. She was taken to Melaka Hospital for further treatment.
Sukri said the woman and her boyfriend had another daughter, aged one, but there were no signs of her being abused.
Sukri said the child’s 30-year-old biological mother was arrested at her house in Banda Hilir at 12.45am today. This came after her 38-year-old boyfriend was arrested at the Banda Hilir police station compound 30 minutes earlier.
He said that the two suspects were remanded for seven days to assist in investigations under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for imprisonment not exceeding 10 years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, if convicted.
Sukri thanked members of the public for informing police about the child. - FMT
