Corpse confusion: Suspected Covid-19 patient's body left behind in apartment

GEORGE TOWN: The body of a senior citizen who is suspected to have died due to Covid-19 was left alone for hours in a Jalan Kebun Bunga apartment here earlier on Saturday (Aug 14).

The man had passed away at 4am on Saturday (Aug 14), but when health authorities came to pick up his wife for quarantine, they accidentally left his body behind.

"We received the message in the apartment Whatsapp group around 9.10am," said 52-year-old neighbour, Vicky Tan.

Tan said the deceased man's wife, who was in her 70s, was taken away by health authorities in a wheelchair to the hospital.

"But the man's body was not taken away," she said.

She said this caused residents in the apartment to worry.

She said the apartment's management body had also advised residents to not use the lift for the time being as the health authority had used the lift to bring down the wife of the deceased.

Tan added that the management body promised that they would conduct a sanitisation exercise at the apartment.

Thankfully the man's body was finally taken away after a member of the media, who was informed of the situation by one of the residents, alerted the police.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said his men sent the body to Penang hospital.

He added that police are investigating the incident. - Star
