DAP rep: 'Avowed wish' for opposition to gain power, but immediate focus is rakyat

 

After slamming both the government and the opposition for being preoccupied with the power struggle for Putrajaya amid the Covid-19 outbreak, a DAP state lawmaker clarified that it is her “avowed wish” for the opposition to gain power so they can serve the people better.

Sabai assemblyperson Kamache Doray Rajoo (above) said Pakatan Harapan will surely handle the pandemic better if they were in power but stressed that her immediate concern is for the rakyat who are suffering.

“It is a basic practice in a vibrant democracy that the opposition always strives to take over and form the government to provide a better alternative to the people - and we are no different.

“Surely, if Harapan takes over the government, we will handle the Covid-19 situation differently and better, to alleviate the suffering of the people. It will be naive for anyone to think otherwise.

“My present immediate concern and frustration are that people are dying all around us, some committing suicide, thousands losing jobs and Covid-19 infections breaching the one million mark,” she said to Malaysiakini yesterday evening.

Earlier yesterday, Kamache had taken both the government and opposition to task over their preoccupation with wrestling for power as she was frustrated by the slow vaccination rate in Bentong, Pahang.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is currently fighting to stay in power, while a fragmented opposition - aided indirectly by an Umno faction - has joined forces to unseat him.

With the withdrawal of support from at least 14 Umno MPs, Muhyiddin appears to have the support of around 100 MPs, which is 11 short of a simple majority.

However, Muhyiddin has insisted he still commands the numbers and will put this to the test via a confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat in September.

Kamache said the rakyat who are suffering do not care about all this talk of who has the majority.

“A 20-day-old child died in my constituency. Do you think the parents will be able to think of this talk of a majority in Parliament?

“A 47-year-old mother died, leaving behind a daughter in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a self-quarantined husband and son at home. Will this family be able to think about the majority?

“A 42-year-old husband died, leaving behind his wife and toddler. Tell me: how can this current political scenario help these families?” Kamache added. - Mkini
