Either Anwar or I will be Opposition's choice for PM, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: The Opposition will have to choose between PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal for their choice of candidate for prime minister.

Shafie said both he and Anwar had agreed that whoever between them who had the highest number of votes would be the sole Opposition candidate for prime minister.

In an interview with Astro Awani Tuesday (Aug 17) night, he said that the final choice would be the one who could get six more votes to reach a simple majority of 111 MPs.

He explained that the combined Opposition – Pakatan Harapan (88), Warisan (eight), Pejuang (four), Parti Sarawak Bersatu (two), Upko (one) and Muda (one) and independent Maszlee Malek – make it 105 MPs.

The combined Opposition has never been able to cross this figure and it was now up to either Anwar or Shafie to bring in six or more MPs from other parties.

If Anwar manages to bring the majority, then Shafie would back Anwar for the post of prime minister and vice versa.

"We have reached an agreement on this," Shafie said, dismissing claims that Warisan and other friendly parties in the Opposition were not supporting the Pakatan block.

He said that this had been discussed with Anwar, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng as well as Parti Amanah Negara president Datuk Mohamad Sabu.

Shafie, who is the first Sabahan bidding to be prime minister, said all sides had agreed that they would honour their commitments when a vote of confidence was called in Parliament.

Shafie said the aim was to restore the results of the 2018 general election in Pakatan Harapan's favour. - Star
