Health DG: Only 3pct of vaccinated health workers positive for Covid-19

There’s only a small percentage of vaccinated health workers who tested Covid-19 positive with just 0.22 percent in Category 3 to 5, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

In a Facebook post at 3am this morning, Noor Hisham stated that the vast majority of those infected with Covid-19 are asymptomatic or only showing mild symptoms after receiving a full vaccination, making it a strong case for the effectiveness of vaccination.

“A total of 248,874 health workers have received full vaccination and from the Health Ministry’s periodical testing as well as testing of those symptomatic, there are 7,599 cases (3.05 pct) of Covid-19 infection.

“Only 17 cases (0.22 pct) belong to Category 3, 4 and 5. Please note there are also two death cases in Category 5,” he said.

The latest guidelines from the Health Ministry divides Covid-19 patients into five categories, where Category 3 to 5 patients are in need of hospitalisation:

  • Category 1 - asymptomatic
  • Category 2 - mild symptoms
  • Category 3 - experience pneumonia
  • Category 4 - in need of oxygen
  • Category 5 - ICU treatment

The data provided by Noor Hisham was recorded between Feb 24 and Aug 13 this year among governmental health workers.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 19,740 new Covid-19 cases; with 10,301 cases in Category 1; 9,141 cases in Category 2; 158 cases in Category 3; 55 cases in Category 4; and 85 cases in Category 5. A total of 274 deaths were also recorded yesterday.

The vaccination efforts in the country remain steady, with some 52.3 percent and 32.9 percent of the country's population having completed their first and second dose of Covid-19 injections respectively as of Sunday, according to Dr Adham Baba, who served as the health minister in the administration of Muhyiddin Yassin. - Mkini
