TOKYO, Aug 7 (dpa): Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra claims a first ever athletics Olympic gold medal for India, 121 years after the nation's only other medals in the sport.
The Commonwealth Games champion Chopra got gold with 87.58 metres.
Silver went to Jakub Vadleych of the Czech Republic, with 86.67, and compatriot Vitezslav Vesely, the 2013 world champion, took bronze like in 2012, with 85.44m.
The only other Indian to medal in athletics is Norman Pritchard who won 200m and 200m hurdles silvers in 1900 in Paris.
Some, including the ruling body World Athletics, list him as British, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and others have him as Indian.
Big pre-event favourite Johannes Vetter of Germany never came to grips with the soft surface and had to settle for ninth. - dpa
