Johor state assembly postponed for second time after Covid-19 cases detected

The fourth term of the 14th Johor state assembly has been postponed again after new Covid-19 cases were detected in the assembly.

State assembly speaker Suhaizan Kaiat confirmed with Malaysiakini that the term, which was originally scheduled to end this Wednesday, has been moved to Sept 6 and 7.

"The postponement is in line with the risk assessment conducted by the Johor Health Department and its postponement is under Standing Order No 7 (3) of the State of Johor Regulations and Standing Orders,” he told Bernama last night.

He said there were three Covid-19 positive cases identified so far in the vicinity of the legislative assembly building since Aug 12, while two people had symptoms and 39 others were under quarantine.

Suhaizan, however, declined to elaborate on the identity of the three who contracted the virus.

It was reported yesterday that four members of the state assembly were barred from entering after one of them tested positive for Covid-19.

However, it is understood that the new infections did not come from state assembly members, but from the staff in the assembly.

The sitting was previously postponed from Aug 12 to last Sunday, which is a working day in Johor, as a measure to avoid the spread of Covid-19. - Mkini
