Newly-minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will make his maiden address to the nation at 5.30pm on Sunday (Aug 22).
Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in his inaugural speech as the ninth prime minister, touted the concept of a "Malaysian Family", calling on people from all walks of life including government and opposition MPs to unite.
"I would like to appeal to all parliamentarians, whether within or outside of government, to work together to help our nation recover.
"Let us with open minds and willing hearts uncover our similarities without digging for differences. We need to find common ground and build consensus for the security and safety of our family, the Malaysian Family," he said.
Ismail said he is pushing the concept of a Malaysian Family because it is more inclusive.
"It is like the existence of a family whose members have intermarried with people of various races and religions, and yet the strong family ties bind them together.
"To me, the concept of a Malaysian Family is akin to the strength of a nation bound together by values found within families with a proper upbringing," he added in his inaugural speech aired on live television.
Ismail also acknowledged Yang di-Pertuan Agong's advice for all political parties in the country to set aside their differences.
"I understand that the political conflicts that have beseeched the country have distressed the public.
Therefore, it is imperative that political stability is swiftly achieved through togetherness, and this includes cross-party cooperation.
"Therefore, I would like to offer the opportunity to the leadership of the opposition to be part of the National Recovery Council and the Special Committee on Covid-19," he said.
‘Constant change of govt a loss'
Ismail, who has 21 months as the prime minister before the current term expires, noted that after the 14th general election, there had been two changes of governments and prime ministers.
"The transitions in our political landscape within a single term is a loss for the people and country.
"Let us move forward. Let us stem this grab for political power.
"Let us as one big family comprising civil servants, the private sector workers, and those of you who work independently - we can repair, heal and help our nation recover," he added.
Ismail also thanked outgoing prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his former Perikatan Nasional cabinet. It was Ismail’s one and only mention of PN in his speech.
"I would like to thank my fellow parliamentarians from Umno, MCA, MIC and PBRS under the banner of BN for their continuous support.
"I would also like to acknowledge my fellow parliamentarians from Bersatu PAS, GPS, Star, PBS, SAPP, and all the independent parliamentarians whose support made possible the formation of this government today," he said.
Bersatu, PAS and Star were mentioned individually even though they form the PN coalition. GPS is a Sarawak-based coalition comprising PBB, PRS, PDP and SUPP.
There had been disagreements between Umno and Bersatu leaders on whether Ismail's government would be a BN or PN government.
Ismail has yet to give an indication of what he intends to call his government. - Mkini
