MACC to probe alleged attempts to ‘buy’ opposition MPs

The MACC is probing alleged attempts to buy opposition MPs into supporting the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

The graft buster said it has met three MPs from the DAP to obtain further information on these allegations.

“At the moment, we have not identified the owner of the phone number that sent those WhatsApp messages to the affected MPs,” read a statement today.

Yesterday, the Pakatan Harapan presidential council called on the MACC to investigate alleged attempts to buy over its MPs.

Several opposition MPs revealed that they had been anonymously offered incentives to change their allegiance.

Among the MPs affected were Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong and Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, who are all from the DAP.

The messages were sent by an unknown number not long after Noraini Ahmad resigned as the higher education minister and Shamsul Anuar Nasarah quit as energy and natural resources minister.

The PN government struggles to cobble together a majority ahead of September's Parliament sitting after many Umno lawmakers withdrew their support from the ruling coalition.

Meanwhile, Kulasegaran has responded to the offer he received by lodging a police report at the Ipoh district police headquarters.

The DAP vice-chairperson told Malaysiakini that his aide Jeremy Chuah lodged the police report as the offer was sent to his mobile phone via WhatsApp.

Perak police confirmed that the case was then referred to the Perak MACC for further investigation.

Perak MACC director Mohd Fauzi Mohamad said Kulasegaran and his aide will be called in to record a statement in the near future.

“I confirm that I have received a referral case from the Royal Malaysian Police regarding the allegation and an investigation will be carried out immediately.

"We will call Kulasegaran and several other parties, including his aide, to record a statement in the near future," he said when contacted today.

Perak police chief Mior Faridalathrash Wahid revealed that two other police reports were made in Kedah and Penang over the same matter.

"The public is reminded not to speculate on the case to avoid interfering with the investigation," he said. - Mkini
