PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s manufacturing performance for the second quarter of this year showed an improvement of 23.6%, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) said.
Its chief statistician, Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said the growth pushed the Industrial Production Index (IPI) for the second quarter up 22.6%, compared with the same period last year.
Aside from manufacturing, he said, the IPI’s positive growth was spurred by mining and electricity, which showed growth of 15.1% and 8.6%, respectively.
In a statement, Uzir said the IPI for June also rose 1.4% compared with the same month last year.
“The growth in June was underpinned by the expansion of 10.3% in the mining index. Meanwhile, the manufacturing and electricity indices fell 0.2% and 4.8%, respectively,” he said.
The main sub-sectors that contributed to the mining sector in June were the natural gas index (13.4%) and the crude oil and condensate index (6.3%). - FMT
