MP shopping spree is on, claim insiders

PETALING JAYA: Operatives from Perikatan Nasional are said to be aggressively pursuing opposition MPs to cross over to make up the numbers after the pullout by several Umno MPs.

An insider from an opposition party admitted that they have been approached.

“The talks are likely to continue,” he said, adding that the PN operatives have been told the MPs from his party are not keen to support Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, he claimed the operatives have offered them “positions”.

He said they were told that PN was hoping to have a simple majority of 112 MPs with the inclusion of their MPs.

Asked if his party will lodge a police report, he said they have sent statutory declarations to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong saying they do not support Muhyiddin .

“As a party, we have not decided if police reports will be lodged. But if they keep pursuing us, we might just do that,” he added.

The sitting government reportedly has only 100 MPs on its side while 120 are against Muhyiddin and his administration.

A DAP leader also said PN operatives had approached their MPs who they felt could be influenced.

“We have told our MPs not to fall into the trap and to do the right thing during the confidence vote,” he added.

PKR insiders said MPs are aware that they will be at the losing end if they jump ship now.

“They have been told of the situation, and they know it is not the right move,” he told FMT.

He said the operatives had approached three PKR MPs from Klang Valley, one from Perak and one from Kedah but all had rebuffed them.

A Bersatu representative, meanwhile, told FMT that they are aware they do not have the numbers.

“We are following the law. There will be a confidence vote in Parliament. MPs can vote as they please,” he added.

Last night, Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders had a meeting chaired by Muhyiddin to discuss the crisis but all the leaders who attended the two-hour meeting remained tight-lipped on what was discussed. - FMT
