A PKR lawmaker has expressed confidence that Muhyiddin Yassin's good nature will prompt the prime minister to surrender his position.
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said this is as Muhyiddin was not a dictator.
"Muhyiddin is not a leader who wants to be a dictator. He is a good leader, a good person and prudent.
"This is my view. Maybe I am wrong. But I believe in the end Muhyiddin will surrender and accept the facts," Hassan said in a statement today.
Malaysiakini's tracking indicates that Muhyiddin is currently 11 MPs short of a majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
A vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat is scheduled for Sept 7, but the prime minister is under pressure to convene Parliament sooner, including from the Yang di Pertuan Agong.
Hassan said Muhyiddin is surely aware that he no longer commands a majority and does not have the palace on his side.
He said the Pagoh MP will also surely not be comfortable with being called an illegitimate prime minister for so long.
The PKR lawmaker also recounted his experiences campaigning and having meetings with Muhyiddin when the latter was still part of Pakatan Harapan.
Thus, he hoped his friend would resign, without needing to wait for a vote of confidence or setting a precedent that a prime minister is sacked by the palace.
"Muhyiddin once emerged as a respected and authoritative leader when he bravely fought a corrupt government leader and the 1MDB scandal.
"He was willing to sacrifice and lose his position because of his principles.
"So now as a friend, I ask Muhyiddin to make a sacrifice again by resigning as prime minister whose legitimacy is clearly in question," Hassan said. - Mkini
