Puad slams Nazri, calls him a ‘hypocrite’

Puad Zakarshi (left) says Nazri Aziz should urge the prime minister to table his confidence vote immediately.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has lashed out at a rebel party MP for accusing their president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, of going against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over the prime minister’s majority in Parliament.

“Nazri Aziz should not be a hypocrite and blindly support Muhyiddin,” said Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

This comes after Nazri questioned Zahid for saying that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin does not have majority support in Parliament.

The Padang Rengas MP argued that the King had agreed to Muhyiddin’s request to determine his support through a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat in September.

Puad said Nazri’s criticism of Zahid, who cited the submission of statutory declarations (SDs) from Umno MPs in questioning the prime minister’s majority, was hypocritical.

“Before this, Nazri was the one who was collecting SDs to present to the King, claiming that most Barisan Nasional MPs wanted Hishammuddin Hussein as their spokesman instead of Zahid,” he told FMT.

“So why is Nazri now questioning Zahid for submitting the SDs of 14 Umno MPs to the King notifying His Majesty that they are withdrawing support for the PM?”

Puad said the MPs were withdrawing support for Muhyiddin because his administration was seen as being treasonous towards the King on the revocation of the emergency ordinances (EOs).

He defended Zahid’s right to question the prime minister’s majority, saying it was an important matter in any democracy.

“What dignity does a government have if it is ruling with a questionable majority?

Puad said if Muhyiddin was confident of his majority, he would have tabled the EOs during the special Dewan Rakyat sitting so they could be debated and put to a vote.

“If the motion of confidence is indeed Muhyiddin’s suggestion, I challenge him to expedite it to next week. Nazri should urge him to do so, too.

“Why the need to wait so long? Many are of the view that this matter will worsen the trust deficit in the government, leading to more investors pulling out.” - FMT
