PETALING JAYA: A senior Umno leader has come out to back MUDA, saying the government is “sorely wrong” if it thinks withholding registration for the fledgling party will dampen its popularity.
“They only have to look at GE14 (the 14th general election) and remind themselves of their own experiences and fortunes, when parties and a coalition that wasn’t registered still won,” said party information chief Shahril Hamdan.
Earlier today, the Registrar of Societies (RoS) informed MUDA that the home minister had rejected its appeal to be registered as an official political party.
The decision was revealed a few minutes before the party’s judicial review application to compel the ministry to make a decision on its registration.
After the court was informed that home minister Hamzah Zainudin had made a decision on MUDA’s appeal for registration, the judicial review was postponed to Aug 18.
Shahril said these tactics will not work. “The more RoS is perceived to blatantly serve one party’s interests, the more voters will reject that party and side with the ones deemed to be victimised,” .
He described MUDA as a movement of young people who had a sense of what they wished to contribute to the country.
“Whether you agree with them or not, they’re here to stay.”
He also wished MUDA good luck for their next hearing on Aug 18. - FMT
