Shocked! Chong Wei reacts to Taufik’s match-fixing revelation

Former world number one shuttler Lee Chong Wei said he has no intention of naming and shaming the individual who allegedly tried to fix the 2006 Doha Asian Games semi-final match between him and Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat.

This came after Taufik alleged in a recent interview with an Indonesian TV host that he was offered 400 million rupiah (RM117,000) by a Malaysian team official to throw the match.

Lee, who was shocked by the revelation, told local daily New Straits Times yesterday he contacted the Indonesian shuttler over the issue.

"Honestly, I had no idea about this. I was surprised when people started contacting me today.

"Taufik is a dear friend, so I quickly got in touch with him. He told me what had happened.

"Thankfully for people like Taufik and me, national pride always comes first,” Lee was reported saying.

He said that he knows who the person behind the alleged attempt is, but it's been so long since this took place.

“I believe we should all move on. I don't want to name or shame anybody," he said.

The three-time Olympic silver medallist admitted that he had also been approached by bookies to fix matches in the past, but said he had never gotten involved.

Like Lee, Taufik also did not reveal the identity of the team official.

NST, in its report, indicated that the official was believed to be a former national team player.

The attempt to fix the match failed and Taufik would go on to clinch the gold medal in the 2006 Doha Asian Games after defeating Lee in the semi-final and China’s Lin Dan in the final.  - Mkini
