PETALING JAYA: The statement that 40 Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs continue to back the government led by Muhyiddin Yassin is genuine, says deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said this decision was made after he chaired a meeting with the 40 MPs on July 29.
The statement began circulating on social media on Thursday, stating that the MPs from the coalition would continue to support the current Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
FMT had previously confirmed the authenticity of the statement with an aide to Ismail, but BN executive secretary Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz said the coalition’s headquarters had denied the statement, which used BN’s logo and address.
“Any official statement must be issued by the chairman or secretary-general, and it can only be issued via the party’s official channel,” he had said, referring to the posts held by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Zambry Abdul Kadir respectively.
However, Ismail today confirmed that the statement was genuine after presenting food baskets at Kampung Charuk Puting, Pahang.
“The news is true. There are indeed 40 BN MPs who gave their support to the PN government,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Ismail also said that the only question raised that day was why the MPs had decided to use the BN letterhead, saying they had decided to do so as they were MPs representing the coalition.
He added that the Umno Supreme Council allowed its MPs to determine who they wished to support at their own discretion.
“(BN) MPs are of the view that if we are allowed to support the government, we cannot take any action to overthrow the government by withdrawing support for the prime minister.” - FMT
