PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member has questioned whether Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun is still the “man of principle” he was once touted as, when he played an integral role in voting reform as the Election Commission chairman.
Ahmad Shabery Cheek said people had high hopes for Azhar after he implemented election reforms during his tenure at the EC.
“This reformative figure was then entrusted to run the Dewan Rakyat. The hope of his supporters was that an efficient Parliament with integrity would play an effective role as a check and balance. The government would be more transparent. Hopefully, this ‘man of principle’ could make our Parliament world-class,” he said in a Facebook post.
Now, in the wake of a letter purportedly written by Azhar to the Palace informing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had lost his parliamentary majority, Shabery called upon the speaker to verify whether the letter was authentic.
“Is it true he wrote a letter to the Palace about the government now having lost its majority?” he asked.
“Is there still integrity without a majority? Certainly, the ‘man of principle’ can confirm it, as many government decisions have to be made at this time.”
Shabery said the longer the question of the prime minister’s majority is left unanswered, the more time there is for “buying and selling” to take place. - FMT
