PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has sworn to party MPs that he would not support Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister, or become a partner of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said tonight.
Speaking at an online talk show, Ahmad said Zahid had made the oath at a recent meeting with several Umno MPs to explain the party’s decisions over the past week.
“There are accusations that the president is leading Umno to be with PH and DAP. The president took an oath in God’s name (Wallahi, Wabillahi, Watallah) in front of Umno MPs that he would not support Anwar as prime minister or be with PH or DAP.
“I was there. The president didn’t want to meet the MPs in big groups for fear of flouting SOPs, so he met them one by one or in pairs to inform them about the party’s direction,” he said.
Ahmad said that none of the 15 Umno MPs who withdrew support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government would back Anwar or work with parties in PH.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has since said that he would subject himself to a confidence vote at the Dewan Rakyat next month.
Ahmad said negotiations were continuing for Umno MPs to withdraw support for the Muhyiddin-led government. He said party leaders needed to inform the MPs about the party’s direction.
“What happens after MPs withdraw support for the PN-led government? That’s our strategy which we cannot mention. But basically, after we withdraw support, we will leave it to the King’s wisdom for his majesty to decide.”
Muhyiddin has been under pressure to prove his support in the Dewan Rakyat and has been urged to call a special sitting of the house this month to put the matter to rest.
Some 23 Umno MPs remain in support of Muhyiddin’s government, while other Barisan Nasional components are also backing the PN administration. - FMT
