Bersih calls BN usage of govt buildings in by-election 'clear violation'

NENGGIRI BY-ELECTION | BN’s alleged usage of government-owned premises for its election operation in Nenggiri clearly contradicts the practice of clean and fair elections, said electoral watchdog Bersih.

Government premises and buildings should not be used as the election campaign headquarters of any political party, Bersih told Malaysiakini.

“The government should ensure that there is a clear separation between the party and the government as stipulated in Article 4(1) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

“If government assets are used to promote and give advantage to any political party, the campaign process will not be fair and the election results will be less valid,” the group added.

This was in response to Perikatan Nasional operation director for the Nenggiri by-election Annuar Musa.

Annuar posted photos on Facebook yesterday showing a building bedecked with BN flags and banners.

The signage - which features the Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) logo - said the building was Dewan Teratai in the Orang Asli settlement of Pos Tohoi, Gua Musang.

Annuar said government assets and officers should not be used as bases of operations for political parties.

Bersih concurred and urged that government assets not be used arbitrarily to give an unfair advantage to government-backed candidates.

The Aug 17 by-election is a straight fight between BN’s Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani and PN’s Mohd Rizwadi Ismail.

On June 19, Kelantan assembly speaker Amar Nik Abdullah declared the seat vacant after receiving a notice from Bersatu that former assemblyperson Mohd Azizi Abu Naim had ceased to be a member of the party on June 13. - Mkini
