Muda blames ‘short notice’ for absence at media licensing talks

A statement from Muda said an email invitation from MCMC was received by party secretary-general Amir Hadi two days before the event.

PETALING JAYA
The youth party Muda has blamed
short notice
from the government for the party’s absence at a session to discuss plans for licensing of social media.

A statement from the party said the invitation, sent via email to its secretary-general Amir Hadi, was received two days prior to the event.

Due to the short notice, Muda was unable to send a representative to attend the session,
 the statement said.

Muda expressed disappointment with communications minister Fahmi Fadzil for allegedly belittling Muda, electoral reform group Bersih and other NGOs that did not attend the session.

Fahmi had criticised Bersih and Muda yesterday for having made many comments about the issue but failed to take the opportunity to offer their views and ask questions on an official platform.

Earlier today, Bersih chairman Faisal Abdul Aziz disputed Fahmi’s claim that Bersih did not attend the meeting. He said a person representing Bersih and the Centre for Independent Journalism had attended the briefing held by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Last week, the commission announced that social media and internet messaging services with at least eight million registered users in Malaysia must apply for a licence from Aug 1, with enforcement beginning on Jan 1, 2025. - FMT
