KUALA LUMPUR: Protestors in Bangladesh took advantage to loot various items from the residence of the country's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, after she resigned and fled the country, based on a local broadcast footage.

The New York Times reported that the footage showed people climbing the gates of the residence, throwing objects at the walls, damaging portraits, and discarding food.

Hasina's resignation was seen as a cause for celebration among the people of Bangladesh, who welcomed the decision.

Social media posts and live television broadcasts also showed people taking livestock from the residence, including chickens, ducks, and rabbits, with some posing for pictures with the animals.

Resident Monsur Ali said he was among the thousands who entered the prime minister's residence and took items from inside.

"We went there out of anger. There was nothing left," he said.

Hasina, 76, was ousted from her position following weeks of protests stemming from conflicts over government positions that citizens desired, leading to fatalities.

Nearly 300 people were reported dead in the riots.

The citizens of the country also opposed Hasina's increasing authoritarianism after 15 years in power. - NST
