Azmin confirms not contesting central position in Bersatu polls

Selangor Bersatu chairperson Azmin Ali has confirmed that he will not be running for any central leadership position at the upcoming party polls next month.

Berita Harian quoted the Bersatu supreme council member as saying that he would instead choose to defend his Gombak division chief post.

“I will not be contesting any higher party positions at the central level. Only for Gombak division chief post,” the former Gombak MP was quoted as saying.

It was reported in July that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had revealed a succession plan for the party’s leadership and named Azmin as a potential secretary-general to replace Hamzah Zainudin.

Nominations for Bersatu’s central leadership positions were held on Saturday and Hamzah, based on the plan announced by Muhyiddin during the party’s annual convention, was the only candidate for the deputy president’s post.

Meanwhile, incumbent deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu confirmed that he had agreed to take a step back and instead contest for one of three vice-president posts.

According to Berita Harian, sources claimed that Azmin, a former PKR deputy president who joined Bersatu in 2020, had declined Muhyiddin’s offer for him to take on the appointed secretary-general post.

“There were rumours that Azmin was unwilling to ‘downgrade’ himself from winning the PKR deputy president’s post for the (appointed) secretary-general post,” said a source.

When contacted, Azmin, however, declined further comments.

“Let me focus on Mahkota (by-election) for now. So much work on the ground,” he told Malaysiakini.

The party’s division-level meeting is scheduled to be held from Oct 12 to 26. - Mkini
