Sheraton Move: PAS No 2 pleads ignorance, but No 1 says 'mastermind'

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has cited the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2020 when launching a broadside against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over his challenge to move a vote of no confidence.

Referring to it as the “DAP government”, he painted a picture of PAS not having a role in the political coup that ended the reign of the Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led administration in just 22 months.

Revealing that PAS has not discussed filing a vote of no confidence against Anwar to date, Tuan Ibrahim (above) said: “Sometimes, the government falls even when no plan is set in motion.

“The ‘DAP government’ (fell after) 22 months, there was no planning.

“We didn’t even know. Suddenly, Mahathir resigned, (there was a) change of government. So I suppose, it would be the same this time around as well,” he added, according to Harakahdaily.

However, Tuan Ibrahim’s recollection of the events in 2020 differed from how PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang remembers it.

Hadi’s touch

In October 2022, Hadi credited himself as the mastermind behind the infamous Sheraton Move which witnessed defectors and former foes forming an alliance under the stewardship of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to form a new government.

Hadi had claimed that he initiated the move to bring down the Harapan government after the administration tried to ratify the Rome Statute and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

The PAS president said he approached Muhyiddin and following the latter’s greenlight, negotiations were held with Umno.

“As a result of the agreement, Muhyiddin made a move which was to announce (Bersatu’s) exit from Harapan. I proposed the Bersatu president as the new prime minister candidate.

“Umno at the time also agreed until there was a Perikatan Nasional government to replace the Harapan administration,” he added.

Ironically, another political move orchestrated by Umno led to Muhyiddin being forced to resign after 17 months at the helm. - Mkini
