DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok will be questioned tomorrow over her remarks that making halal certification mandatory for restaurants could become a burden to businesses.
The Seputeh MP is scheduled to have her statement recorded at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters at 10am.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Kok said she was puzzled that her remarks have been regarded as infringing on matters related to 3R, which are the sensitive subjects of race, religion and royalty.
“If one reads and analyses my statements comprehensively and in all contexts, it becomes unambiguous that they contain no connotations or references to 3Rs or anything related.
“It is both unfortunate and puzzling that the authorities have classified my statements as potentially breaching the law under Sections 298 and 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” she added.
The DAP leader said an investigation based on this classification is therefore unnecessary and unwarranted, as no crime has been committed.
“I have provided further clarification to elucidate the intent of my statements, which should have resolved any concerns and rendered further investigation unnecessary.
“My statements were simply a matter of voicing concerns and addressing issues faced by people on the ground, as part of my duty as an MP,” she added.
No sedition
Responding to a question, Kok also clarified that her statements do not contain seditious tendencies whatsoever.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, who said that five police reports have been lodged against the MP, classified the matter as falling under 3R.
Sections 298 and 505(b) of the Penal Code cover causing religious offences and statements conducive to public mischief.
Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 relates to misuse of network facilities.
Kok, who had come under fire from both Umno and the opposition over her remarks, had clarified that calling for a review does not constitute disrespecting Islam.
She said that she supported the government and the Islamic Development Department’s efforts to promote halal certification for the food and beverage industry. - Mkini
