Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh announced that he will join the solidarity rally for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak on Jan 6 despite his party backing out.
However, the Malacca state executive councillor said he would attend the rally in his personal capacity.
“As a party member, we uphold the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and respect the party’s decision not to gather.
“However, I will still attend in my personal capacity to support Najib, as I have before,” the New Straits Times reported him as saying today.
Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that his party has called off its rally for Najib, who will be attending a court hearing regarding the purported royal addendum allowing him to serve his remaining prison sentence at home.
This comes after a statement from Istana Negara on the king’s pardon powers and a warning from the inspector-general of police not to attend the rally.
“Umno will never act contrary to the Constitution and remains committed to respecting all rules and laws as decreed by His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” Asyraf was reported as saying.
“In line with the principle of upholding His Majesty’s decree and following the directive from the inspector-general of police, Umno has decided not to proceed with the assembly scheduled for Jan 6.
“Umno places its full confidence in the benevolence and wisdom of His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in delivering full justice to Najib,” he added.
PAS to press ahead
Despite Umno backing out, PAS indicated that it will press ahead with the rally.
“The solidarity rally is about defending the Agong’s powers and prerogative from being manipulated, apart from supporting Najib’s efforts to get justice under the same principles.
“As such, PAS has no plans to revise our earlier call to our members in regard to the peaceful rally scheduled on the same day, time, and place mentioned,” its secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan was reported as saying. - Mkini
