KOTA KINABALU: The lawyer representing the family of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir has reminded all parties not to turn the solidarity gathering for her into a political platform.
Lawyer Hamid Ismail said the event must not be tainted with political agendas, as its sole purpose was to seek justice for Zara.
"If anyone intends to politicise it, then don't invite them. We are all gathering for Zara, not for any political party," he told reporters after the mention of Zara's inquest at the Coroner's Court here today.
He was responding to several incidents where political elements had surfaced during solidarity gatherings for Zara, which drew public criticism.
Hamid also issued a stern warning to social media influencers not to intimidate witnesses or spread false stories related to Zara's death.
"There are witnesses, especially students, who refuse to come forward because of threats from netizens and certain individuals on social media.
"I encourage the public to step forward, either to the police or directly to me. To influencers, do not intimidate witnesses. In the pursuit of justice, do not resort to slander or threats against others," he said.
Meanwhile, he said Zara's mother was grateful for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's assurance that no one would escape legal action.
"Zara's mother was pleased when the prime minister gave his assurance that no one would be spared from action and prosecution.
"I have spoken to her about this matter, and she was happy and has urged all witnesses, especially students, not to be afraid.
"Do not fear coming forward. If you are afraid of approaching the police, come to us (the lawyers)," he added.
The Coroner's Court here has fixed Sept 3 for the start of the inquest into Zara's death to determine the cause. - NST
