Unsurprisingly, Akmal doubles down with crude 'OKU' jab at DAP Youth

In a move that would surprise few, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh’s tirade over an upside-down flag at a Chinese school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, has turned distasteful, with him now mocking his critics as deserving disability status too.

“Please give these people a mirror and an OKU (disabled) card too,” he said in a Facebook post in response to an article quoting DAP Youth accusing him of being inconsistent and hypocritical.

However, Akmal declined to elaborate, saying he was “too lazy to type a long message” because his critics were “too dense to understand”.

Earlier, Akmal had urged the authorities not to back down after it was revealed that the flag was purportedly put up by a special needs employee.

Questioning the school’s wisdom in entrusting the task of raising the flag to such a person, he said: “We do not want claims like special needs or intellectual disability being used as an excuse if such an incident were to happen again.”

He also urged the Education Ministry to investigate the identity and condition of the alleged special needs individual.

Predictable pattern

Akmal’s remarks are consistent with his unenviable track record of hurling insults at critics, particularly those from DAP.

During a spat with DAP MP Teresa Kok over the halal certification issue last year, he referred to her as an “old nyonya”.

He later clashed with Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming over the “ham and cheese sandwich” controversy in January this year.

When Nga likened himself to a “lion” and Akmal to a “fly”, the Umno Youth chief responded with an image of a pig with a lion’s mane.

Yesterday, DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong reminded Malaysians that politicising issues related to the national flag does nothing to advance the country and only risks stoking unnecessary conflict.

The Pasir Bedamar assemblyperson took aim at the “village champion” (jaguh kampung) mentality and the hypocrisy of politicians who remained silent or failed to show similar outrage over past incidents involving inaccurate depictions of the flag.

Prior to Woo’s statement, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had cautioned against politicising the flag gaffe. In response, Akmal insisted the issue was about patriotism, and not politics. - Mkini
