PARLIAMENT | State water provider Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) owed Tenaga Nasional Berhad some RM61 million in unsettled electricity bills as of June 30 this year.
This is according to a parliamentary reply by Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Fadillah Yusoff, who was responding to a question posed by Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli) on Aug 7.
According to the minister, records showed 492,174 TNB accounts in Kelantan had outstanding bills as of the date, with a total amount owed reaching RM229 million.
"From this amount, the highest amount came from the domestic consumers category with 411,780 accounts owing a total of RM114 million.
"This was followed by non-domestic users (commercial and industrial) with 80,196 accounts totalling RM53 million in outstanding bills.
"The rest of the amount involved AKSB, which has an outstanding amount of RM61 million involving 198 accounts," he said.
Zahari had sought the minister to provide figures on how many consumer accounts in Kelantan still have outstanding bills with TNB since last year to date.
According to Fadillah, the total outstanding amount had decreased by RM4.33 million compared to Dec 31 last year.
Adding further, he said several factors have been identified as having contributed to the problem.
They include the failure of premises owners to transfer electricity accounts to their tenants, which has resulted in an increase in unpaid bills for the domestic category. - Mkini
