Police: DPP reviewing investigation papers in upside-down flag case

The Penang deputy public prosecutor (DPP) is reviewing the investigation paper concerning the hardware store owner who hung the Jalur Gemilang upside-down in front of his shop on Jalan Bertam Perdana, Kepala Batas.

Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the police had sent the investigation paper to the DPP’s office at 2.30pm today after the police completed their investigation into the case.

“The investigation paper has been referred to the DPP and was informed that the investigation paper will be referred to Putrajaya for further instructions,” he said in a statement today.

Today, the media reported that the 59-year-old hardware shop owner has been released on police bail after the police finished recording his statement.

Following the man’s arrest, the police have opened an investigation into the case under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Earlier, a 21-second video went viral on social media showing two men at a hardware store installing and flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down, drawing criticism from netizens.

Following this, several NGOs and Bertam assemblyperson Reezal Merican Naina Merican lodged a police report regarding the matter.
