Demands for RCI mustn't be based on hearsay - PKR Youth chief

Calls for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) must be grounded in solid, compelling evidence, not mere hearsay and insinuations, said PKR Youth chief Kamil Abdul Munim.

Kamil said he respects any proposal to establish an RCI, and agrees in principle that the truth must be upheld through a transparent, legally grounded process.

“However, demands for an RCI should not be based solely on hearsay, assumptions, or innuendo. They must rest on strong and convincing evidence,” he said in a statement to Malaysiakini.

He was queried on whether he would support an RCI into the alleged “corporate mafia” scheme involving the MACC.

Kamil pointed out that similar pressure had previously arisen over the appointment of the chief justice, which he claimed ultimately proved unfounded.

This endless cycle of “preemptive politics”, he said, must be put to an end by allowing due processes to run their course.

“Let existing processes - whether investigations, inquiries, or special committees - run their course, as these mechanisms are designed to gather evidence comprehensively before considering larger steps such as an RCI,” he added.

Calls for RCI gain support

Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke announced that his party will be proposing an RCI at Friday’s cabinet meeting on the alleged “corporate mafia” scheme.

While the cabinet had previously agreed to form a special task force investigating MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s shareholding controversy, allegations surrounding the graft busters’ involvement in the scheme remain unsettled.

Separately, DAP backbencher Khoo Poay Tiong had also warned in Parliament today that the government risks public backlash unless it probes the allegations.

DAP’s call was also backed by MCA president Wee Ka Siong, who demanded a transparent investigation into claims of MACC officers’ entanglement in the alleged “mafia”.

Meanwhile, Kamil, who also serves as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary in the latter’s capacity as finance minister, highlighted that the decision to hold an inquiry was made quickly, only one day after the Bloomberg report was published.

He pointed out that an RCI’s main objective must be to ensure justice is served based on facts, not perceptions.

“If the evidence presented later demonstrates a genuine need for an RCI, then such a decision should be made responsibly and with integrity,” he said.

Shareholdings, ‘collusion’ under scrutiny

Azam is facing renewed scrutiny following reports by Bloomberg and Malaysiakini detailing more of his shareholdings, which appear to exceed limits imposed on civil servants.

Checks with Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) records revealed that the MACC chief had, at one point, held substantial shares in Velocity Capital Partner Berhad and Awanbiru Technology Berhad.

The records indicated that Azam owned 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital and about 4.52 million shares in Awanbiru Technology.

A separate Bloomberg report published later also alleged that MACC officers, particularly an investigative unit dubbed “Section D”, had colluded with business figures in schemes to edge out corporate rivals and orchestrate takeovers.

This was purportedly done with the knowledge of the MACC’s top brass, including Azam.

MACC has repeatedly claimed that the allegations were made with malicious intent to tarnish the commission’s reputation. - Mkini
