JOHOR BARU: State Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has advised the people to be cautious of slander and lies after a list of coalition candidates for the upcoming Johor election began circulating.
He said the list, which has been spread via social media and WhatsApp since yesterday was fake.
He said any announcement regarding BN candidates would be made only through official party channels.
"In the heat of this election, there will undoubtedly be various forms of slander, rumours, provocation and fake news being played up by certain parties to create confusion among the people," he said in a statement.
Onn Hafiz said the public needs to practice tabayyun (verification) by checking the authenticity of any information before believing or sharing it with others.
He said Islam teaches its followers to investigate any news received to avoid any mistakes and regrets.
"Therefore, I urge all Bangsa Johor to obtain information from official sources and not be easily influenced by news which cannot be verified," he said.
He also urged all parties to engage in politics in a mature, moral and responsible manner to ensure that harmony, stability and the democratic process in Johor remain protected throughout the course of the state election. - NST
