SEREMBAN: Police have detained a 46-year-old woman to assist in investigation into the alleged abuse and neglect of her nine-year-old adopted daughter.
Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Yatim Osman said preliminary probe revealed that the girl was often beaten by the suspect over minor matters.
"We also received a report on Sunday (June 7) of the victim being locked inside a store room located behind a house in Taman Tuanku Jaafar throughout the recent school holidays.
"The victim was placed inside the unlocked storeroom and fed twice a day.
"She was only allowed into the house to use the toilet and had to return to the storeroom immediately after," he said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim has been the adopted child of the family since she was 20-months-old.
ACP Mohd Yatim said the girl has been sent to hospital for treatment.
He said police will apply for an order to remand the suspect on Monday (June 8) morning.
The case is being probed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exposure to danger.
Offender can be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed up to 20 years or both upon conviction.
