Tuan Ibrahim moots snap polls for 'unstable' Perlis, along with other states

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has described the Perlis government as “unstable”, suggesting that state elections be held there too, alongside Johor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, and Sarawak.

"PAS will hold a meeting to review preparations for this (Johor) state election.

"It would also be better if it were held simultaneously for Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak, and even Perlis, which is seen as unstable.

"Indeed, if the federal government is ready to hold a general election, we are also prepared," he reportedly told Berita Harian.

Tuan Ibrahim said that PAS is also gearing up for the Johor polls and will finalise the number of seats it will contest following yesterday's dissolution of the state legislative assembly.

He added that the number of seats PAS will contest is subject to discussions with other parties in the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

“We will examine the proposed number of seats put forward by Johor PAS before finalising it in the PN meeting,” the Kubang Kerian MP said.

Yesterday, Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, paving the way for the 16th state election.

The state BN chairperson said he had sought the consent of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for the dissolution to ensure the stability of the state government.

The Election Commission (EC) is expected to announce the dates for nomination, early voting, and polling in the coming days.

The dissolution ends speculation over the timing of the state polls, which intensified in recent weeks following indications that the assembly could be dissolved earlier than its scheduled expiry in 2027.

Trouble in Perlis

Ties between PAS and Bersatu soured after the Islamist party lost the Perlis menteri besar post to the latter.

Last month, Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah indicated that he would not hesitate to dissolve the state assembly after it was alleged that several PAS assemblypersons had planned to table a motion of no confidence against him.

This comes after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang openly criticised Bersatu, adding his party may review its cooperation with the latter.

Among others, the Marang MP accused Bersatu of making unilateral decisions, such as withdrawing support for state governments, and of perceived failures in maintaining internal party discipline.

The first matter concerned two Negeri Sembilan Bersatu assemblypersons who withdrew their statutory declarations supporting the removal of Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun over the ongoing dispute between the state nobility.

Hadi described the move as a violation of the camaraderie between both parties, adding that PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan has sent a letter to Bersatu concerning the matter.

Following Hadi’s remarks, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said his party would discuss the issues raised in the party's next top leadership meeting. - Mkini
