Two moderate quakes hit Philippines within two hours, no tsunami risk to Malaysia

 

KUALA LUMPUR: Two moderate earthquakes struck the Mindanao region in the Philippines within a span of two hours on Monday (June 8), but posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

In a Facebook post, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the latest quake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred at 7.22pm Monday.

The epicentre was detected at a depth of 48km, about 112 km southeast of Koronadal City, Philippines.

Earlier, a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale was recorded at 5.17pm at a depth of 10km, with its epicentre located 171km northwest of the Talaud Islands, Indonesia.

So far, 15 people have been reported killed and at least 134 others injured following a 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao at 7.37am Monday. - Bernama
