Fisheries department says technical teams from both countries have completed joint inspections of farms and laboratories.
Fisheries department director-general Adnan Hussain said the negotiations are now in the final phase after technical teams from both countries conducted several joint evaluations and inspections of farms and facilities, Harian Metro reported.
He said the department would submit its recommendations and views to the agriculture and food security ministry to determine the next steps.
“We have completed the review of survey forms from Malaysia and Thailand to obtain information on the status of shrimp farming, the condition of farms, as well as the practices and farming methods used in both countries.
“We conducted a virtual inspection of the farms and facilities related to the aquaculture industry in Thailand, involving sea bass and shrimp in early August.
“In general, both parties are satisfied with the results of the inspection of their respective farms,” he was quoted as saying at the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (Maha) 2026 at MAEPS in Serdang.
On May 16, Malaysia tightened controls on Thai fisheries imports by requiring Certificates of Analysis for sea bass and temporarily restricting imports of five shrimp species.
The five species are black tiger shrimp, whiteleg shrimp, banana shrimp, brown shrimp and blue shrimp.
Adnan said inspections covered shrimp farms, hatcheries and laboratories, including checks on fish and shrimp diseases, food safety and the use of prohibited chemicals under the Food Act 1983.
“We also inspected their laboratory, and they (Thailand) inspected our laboratory to see the analyses conducted, including fish and shrimp disease analyses as well as (impact on) human health.
“Now we are waiting for the Thai side to hold the final negotiations to determine this process,” he added. - FMT
