Pearly Tan-M Thinaah captured the Denmark Open title, ending Malaysia’s 18-year drought in the women’s doubles and becoming only the second pair to win the crown in the tournament’s 90-year history.

The world No 5 pair took 36 minutes to beat Japan’s 21st-ranked duo Hinata Suzuki-Nao Yamakita 21-18, 21-11 in the World Tour Super 750 final at the SJ Bank Arena in Odense.

Malaysia last won the women’s doubles title through Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui in 2008.

Pearly-Thinaah won US$70,300 (RM287,048) as champions while the runners-up took home US$33,250 (RM135,766).

This is the second World Tour title for the Asian Games bronze medallists this year, after winning the Indonesia Masters in January.

Besides this championship, Pearly-Thinaah have appeared in two other Super 750 finals in their career, winning the French Open in 2022 and becoming runners-up at  the Japan Open last year.

This is a breakthrough of sorts for the pair who have been struggling to regain their old form after Pearly was forced to lay off for two months in June because of a back injury.

Their victory will strengthen their position on the qualifying list for the World Tour Finals in December where only the top eight are selected. They are currently in the sixth spot and can expect to jump a slot or two when the revised list is published on Tuesday. - FMT
