No directive for Bersatu grassroots to back PH, says Peja

The party's vice-president says this is despite Melaka PH chief Adly Zahari having expressed no objection to PH voters supporting Bersatu in constituencies the coalition is not contesting.

PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu has confirmed that the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party has not instructed its grassroots to support Pakatan Harapan candidates in the coming Melaka state election.

Faizal, better known as Peja, said no directive had been issued to party members and supporters to back PH, despite Melaka PH chief Adly Zahari having expressed no objection to PH voters supporting Bersatu in constituencies the coalition is not contesting, Berita Harian reported.

“Nevertheless, we are grateful that there are leaders from PH who have expressed such a position,” he told reporters while campaigning in the Ayer Keroh state constituency.

On Nov 1, Adly said PH is taking an open approach and leaving it to its members and supporters to decide whom to support in seats not contested by the coalition in the Melaka polls.

Adly, who is also Amanah vice-president, said the coalition had not issued any directive instructing its members and supporters to support any particular party in those constituencies.

PH is contesting 24 of the 28 seats in the Melaka selection, while Bersatu is fielding candidates in seven constituencies.

PH and Bersatu are facing off in three constituencies – Ayer Keroh, Kelebang and Pengkalan Batu – while in Gadek, PH is going up against Bersatu’s ally, Putra.

FMT quoted analyst Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as saying that both PH and Bersatu appeared to prefer keeping their pact in the Melaka polls out of the limelight as a “strategic” move.

On Bersatu’s decision to defend the seats it won in the 2021 state polls — Sungai Udang and Bemban — Faizal said it was a realistic move, given the party machinery’s preparations at all levels.

Forgoing Gadek

On the decision to withdraw from contesting in Gadek at the eleventh hour, Faizal said it was due to coordination issues that could not be resolved in time.

“The decision was made after taking into account the preparations of the party machinery and the readiness of our ally to contest in the constituency.

“We also asked our members and supporters in Gadek to support the Putra candidate as part of efforts to foster cooperation between the two parties under the Ikatan Prihatin Rakyat alliance,” he said.

Bersatu initially announced Zamri Abu Bakar as its candidate for the seat but did not field a candidate when nomination day came.

There will be a four-cornered contest for the seat involving S Nadarajah (Barisan Nasional), K Jegasilan (PH), B Laveen (Bersama) and Laila Norinda Maon (Putra). - FMT
